Numbers 11:29 “But Moses replied, ‘Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!'”
Moses was having problems leading the people of Israel by himself, so God called him to gather 70 elders of the people to assist him. God took part of the Spirit He placed on Moses and put Him on the 70 elders, who then proceeded to prophesy but never did so again. There were two of the elders still within the camp when this transpired, and they too prophesied. Joshua caught word of it and reported it to Moses, who replied that he wished that all God’s people were prophets and for Joshua not to be jealous for Moses, the prophet of God. There was no opportunity for them to impinge upon Moses’ position.
Little did Moses know that he gave a preliminary prophecy to the one given by the prophet Joel many centuries later, when he said that God would pour out His Spirit upon all flesh and that men and women would prophesy. Peter even centuries later than Joel experienced the first outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon God’s people on the Day of Pentecost. All 120 people in the upper room that day were baptized with the Spirit and Fire as prophesied by John the baptist. On that day only a partial fulfillment of that prophecy came true. God is still in the process of pouring out His Spirit upon all of His children with young men seeing visions and old men having dreams and sons and daughters of God being baptized with the Spirit and Fire.
Moses may not have lived to hear Joel prophesy or hear Peter proclaim the first installment of the outpouring, but he is looking down from heaven and witnessing what he wished had been true in his day. People are being used to prophesy and be prophets, as the Spirit gives people inspiration to do so. For Peter said that no one ever prophesied (truly) of God except by inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Moses, your day of wishing is over. God is doing what you only dreamed. If you my brother or sister don’t know the baptism of the Spirit and Fire, I invite you today to ask God to infill you with His Spirit. Jesus promised prior to His ascension that He would send another helper–a comforter, who as John prophesied would be the one baptizing in Spirit and with Fire.
Water baptism is an outward expression of the inward transformation of the saving of your spirit. Baptism with Spirit and Fire is a separate experience. He dwells in you the day you converted to being God’s child, and you can now know another great experience in God–the Holy Ghost baptism. It is generally evidenced by speaking in unknown (to you) tongues, as the Spirit gives you utterance. Don’t be afraid of what God the Father sent us and God the son promised. You can operate in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. He gives them to you as He sees fit for their use in the body of Christ. It is not just for Pentecostals and “charismatics” but for all of God’s children.
Father, thank You for the gift of Your Spirit who not only indwells within this earthly temple not made with human hands but who also gives to us grace gifts from You to use in the body of believers to build up and strengthen and assist other believers. They are not for our benefit but for the rest of Your people. You have chosen to operate the gift of prophecy in me because You are God. Any word I speak, I give You credit because I am just a megaphone in Your hands. As Moses said and I agree, oh that all Your people were prophets and prophesied the Truth of Jesus. However, You have seen fit to give the grace gifts to those You have chosen. Fulfill the last portion of Joel’s prophecy and pour out Your Spirit upon all flesh, who have accepted You as Lord and Savior. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
