Numbers 14:45 “Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.”
The 12 spies had gone out and reconnoitered the land of Canaan and brought back word to Moses about the condition of the land and its inhabitants. Ten of the 12 spies said that the land was filled with giants that were too strong and imposing for Israel to overcome despite the land being true concerning its “flowing with milk and honey.” These 10 spies spread their rumors throughout the camp causing Israel to fear advancing and overcoming their enemies. Thus, God separated Himself from Israel and refused to lead them into Canaan at that time. He told the people not to go up into the high hill country, but the disobeyed God and went anyway only to find the local people there, who “beat them down all the way to Hormah.”
How many times has God told us and even warned us not to do something that was not in our best interests, yet we went ahead and did it anyway? Most people, if honest, would answer, “yes” to at least having done that once in their lifetime. God is omniscient–all-knowing! He knows better than we do what we need and what we don’t need. He knows what we desire and shouldn’t desire. He made us; therefore, of all beings in the universe who would know more or better than He?!?
Jesus taught us that we should focus on today because yesterday is gone with tomorrow possibly not coming. He told us to seek first God’s kingdom and righteousness and THEN all the necessities of life would be added to us (provided for) by God the Father. Why? Because He knows what we have need of before we even ask for it! How arrogant and foolish it was for Israel to venture out into Canaan when God explicitly said, “Don’t!” They got what they deserved for their rebellion–a good ol’ fashioned beat down!! The locals schooled them in the art of the smack down.
Have you gone down a path that God said, “DON’T GO THERE!”? If so, there is still hope because God will forgive us if we confess our sins. He will chastise us when we are wrong, AND we are not to refuse that correction. It helps us grow and become more like Jesus. Hard to believe that being punished for wrong doing makes us more like Jesus??? Obedience–that is the likeness and conformity to being like Jesus! Remember that the path to hell (destruction) is W–I–D–E and MANY enter therein, but narrow is the way that leads to life and few enter therein.
Father, thank You for showing me the WAY (JESUS) to the path of righteousness that leads to LIFE (JESUS) which is the only TRUTH (JESUS) in the universe. I have wandered through my own deserts for many years and ventured out into remote areas where I had no place going or being. It was lonely out there and dangerous too! It was the light of Your truth that brought me out of darkness and into life. Without You, JESUS, I would have died in my own wilderness at my own doing and rebellion. You are more than gracious; You are loving. I need Your Spirit’s guidance now more than ever in my life. Please continue to lead me and guide me into all truth via the Spirit of God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
