Deuteronomy 20:4 “For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.”
Moses’ instruction for kingdom living included guidance on how to face their enemies in battle. Part of that instruction stated that the priest would come and address the people with the words that God would go with them and fight for them to bring victory to His people. Of course, all this predicated on the fact that the people had to live according to God’s ways not their own. If they departed from serving Him, they would suffer the curses of the law rather than its blessings from obedience to God.
Why do we spend so much time fighting amongst ourselves and with each other? The Bible is explicitly clear that we don’t fight with flesh and blood, especially those in the house of God, but rather against principalities, powers of darkness, and spiritual wickedness in high places. Yes, in ancient Israel they fought against other nations but for the sole purpose of exacting God’s judgment upon the Canaanites, who perverted themselves in idolatry and demon worship. There were other nations who suffered God’s wrath at the hands of Israel, but we, the children of God, now wage warfare against the real enemy, the forces of darkness – Satan and crew.
When we take the time to stop and think and hear from the Holy Spirit, we soon realize that the enemy operates within the boundaries of warfare – the space between your ears! Sure demons may attack you physically with pain and disease, as they did Job, but the real battle for Job as well as us is in the mind, where our spirit and soul reside. Once the enemy attacks, we start to get unsettled and react out of fear and/or emotions rather than act out of the knowledge of God’s Word.
The Bible states that the One, God, living inside us is greater than the one, Satan, living in the world. Satan is the prince of this age and the air, but he is still subject to the will of God and the power of God. One day he will bend the knee before Jesus the Anointed One and declare, “Jesus is LORD!” like the rest of all creation. He is not afforded a by-pass on that one. God is a jealous God and will not share His glory with another being. Thus, Lucifer was kicked out of God’s kingdom for his rebellion.
Don’t let the enemy defeat you in the battlefield of your mind. Know and learn the Word of God that you may be able to stand in the day of battle to wage spiritual warfare against the enemy. Put on the whole armor of God: helmet of salvation, flak jacket of righteousness, utility belt of truth, combat boots of the gospel of peace, armor of faith, the sword of the Spirit (your Bible) and most importantly the word of prayer. When you take salvation, righteousness, truth, peace, faith, and the Word of God into battle, you take God along with you. All of these things are from God and are God. It is only through Him that victory over the enemy and any trial/tribulation comes!
Father, I never want to go into spiritual battle without having You with me! I need all of the tools You provide in my arsenal when the battle wages. The battle is Yours, but the fight is mine. Gear me up, strengthen me, and let me loose on the enemy. Now that I am suited up with the armor You provided, I am ready to stand and face the enemy. I am ready to die for the cause of the cross and the good news of the gospel if necessary. I will fear no evil, for You are with me. You even prepare a banquet table for me in the presence of my enemies. Though they may surround me, they will not overcome. I am Yours, and You are mine! Fight for me, Dad, and kick some demon tail! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
