God is with you; He won’t abandon you.

Deuteronomy 31:8 “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Moses told the people that he would not and could not lead them into the Promised Land, but Joshua would do so just as God commanded. Before Moses turned over the operation and leadership to Joshua, he told him to be strong and courageous. He also told him not to fear anything when entering into Canaan because God was with him and would go before Israel because God never leaves or abandons His people.

This statement is in stark contrast to the previous lesson we learned. In chapter 30 we learned how Israel would miss out on God’s desire for relationship because of their idolatry and rebellion thus making way for  Gentiles to enter the family of God. However, in chapter 31, Moses told Joshua that God never leaves or abandons His people.

This word gives hope for the Jews in the future. Although God blinded His people spiritually as a result of their rebellion and idolatry over the centuries, He said that He would write a new covenant on their hearts, a better covenant. That covenant is the blood of Jesus shed for the remission of sins for all mankind in order to make a new race of humanity consisting of both Jew and Gentile with the middle wall of separation torn down between them through the work of the cross.

Now, both Jew and Gentile are given equal opportunity to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, as the Holy Spirit draws them to God through Jesus. Many Jews still don’t accept Jesus as Messiah, but soon and very soon, they will experience their Savior like never before. During the Great Tribulation, many Jews will have their never hearing ears opened and their never seeing eyes opened to the truth of their Redeemer, the stone the builders rejected but has now become the chief cornerstone.

God is true to His Word. He never leaves nor abandons His people: Jew and Gentile. Let us give praise to Him for being the faithful God!

Father, it pains You to lose any soul to the depths of hell because of their sin and rebellion. However, You knew before creation who would and would not love You. Their names were written in the Book of Life before they were ever born. You promised us that You would never leave us or abandon us. We are the ones who leave and abandon You for the pursuits of our flesh and idolatry. There is no god like You! You are the only Sovereign in the universe! Blessed be Your name! Thank You for including me in Your family. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
