Give God the glory for the victory!

And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me. – Judges 7:2

God chose Gideon to lead Israel as a judge and to lead an army against their enemy the Midianites. When Gideon gathered his army there were about 22,000 men in total, but God said there were too many men. He released several thousands to return home. Then God said that the remaining 10,000 were too many as well and whittled it down to just 300 men who drank water from the river by raising their hand to their mouths rather than lap water like a dog. It was through these 300 that God defeated Midian and prevented Israel from taking the glory for themselves.

Have you ever noticed that God does things contrary to human thought? Normally, in battle you want as many troops available as possible to hopefully overwhelm the enemy by sheer number alone. However, a large number is not always the best plan of attack. On a spiritual level God didn’t want to share His glory with Israel. Sure, He’d chosen them as His inheritance from among the families of the world, but He still would not share His glory with anyone else.

In our lives it is no different. God wants to receive all the glory and honor for being the One to provide for us the things we need and for delivering us from the enemy. When we take credit for something that God did, He does get jealous and will not share His glory with another. In the case of Israel in Gideon’s day they were so prone to turning away from God and worshiping idols. God desired to prevent His people from doing so once again. Even today He desires that we worship Him alone. The commandment that there be no other god before Yahweh still applies today. The Bible states, thou O LORD art worthy to receive glory, and honor, and power.

Let us take the time today to bow ourselves before the King of kings and Lord of lords and give Him the glory due His name. All power and authority in heaven, in earth and under the earth have been given to Jesus, the Son of God. To Him alone belong our praise and worship. There is no One else who can deliver us from the grip of sin and satan. There is no One else who can save us from death. There is no One else who loves us when we deserved death. Humble yourself before the mighty hand of God and acknowledge Him in all His ways as the Supreme One of the universe. He alone allows you to live or die and no other. There is no God like Jehovah!

Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus. I humbly bow before You and recognize You as the One who saved me from sin and gave me life eternal and are the only One worthy to be praised and worshiped and glorified. You are the One who wins the victory! It doesn’t take an army to defeat the enemy, but it does take us to stand still and see the salvation of the LORD! Amen.
