The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord. – Acts 11:21
The Word of the LORD began to be spread around Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria just as Jesus had said. As the apostles taught and preached the gospel of Jesus, many people came to faith and to believe on the LORD Jesus the Messiah. Then, in turn, the converts began to spread out to the ends of the earth spreading the good news of salvation in Jesus. Some traveled to the city of Antioch, where followers were first called Christians, and saw the conversion of many people to Messiah because the LORD was with them.
This verse should be the testimony of every believer that walks the face of the earth. What testimony is that? It is that the LORD is with us and a great number of people turn to the LORD because of our witness of Him. When Jesus commissioned the apostles to go out into the city, the countryside and the ends of the earth to preach the gospel, baptize converts, and make them into His disciples, He didn’t mean for it to stop with the disciples.
If we are careful to read the words of Jesus in the gospels, we will find where He prayed to God thanking Him for the souls that would turn to the LORD because of the testimony of the apostles. “Neither pray I for these alone [apostles], but for them also which shall believe on me through their word. That they all may be one, as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” (John 17:20-21)
The apostles led many to Messiah and baptized them and disciples them, and these in turn went out and continued the Great Commission of evangelism-discipleship. Not all of these newly converted were apostles. Many were just ordinary people like you and me who followed the leading of God’s Spirit and went out spreading the good news of salvation in Jesus. We, too, should be doing the same thing. They continued the work of the Great Commission, as we should too! The Great Commission DID NOT stop with the apostles. It is a continuing movement of God that will cease only when the last soul converts to God and not before.
Father, I pray to you today and come before You with this request in the name of Jesus, Your Son. Help me to lead as many people as possible to You. It is Your work through the Holy Spirit to draw people unto You, but be with me as You were with those faithful converts who went out converting others. Let it be said of me, not out of arrogance or pride, that the LORD was with me, and many people came to the LORD because of my witness. The glory belongs to You and You alone! Amen.
