Don’t develop a mob mentality. Know who you are in Messiah.

Scripture:
The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there. – Acts 19:32

Observation:
Paul had taught in Ephesus for some time against the idolatry that was there. Many people abandoned their belief in Artemis and quit buying silver idols from the silversmiths, who complained that Paul’s teachings were putting them out of business and harming the following of Artemis. The news spread through the city that led to a riot and the seizure of Paul’s companions and their mistreatment by the crowd. The crowd grew so big so fast that many didn’t even know why they were there in the first place.

Application:
When I read about the crowd that gathered in Ephesus because of the noise unleashed by the jealous and heathen businessmen, I think about the current rioting and chaos going on around the world. In the Middle East they riot for their freedom. In London, they riot over the shooting of a citizen. In other parts of the world rioting goes on for this cause or that one. Many of the people get caught up in the frenzy and don’t even know what it is they are revolting against.

Take the case in London recently (as of August 2011). A 10 or 11 year old girl has been charged and arrested in the rioting for throwing things at a store. She’s not even old enough to really know what the issue at hand is. When I watch the riots in the Middle East for freedom, even in Israel among Palestinians, I see the boys picking up rocks and throwing them at soldiers or getting in on the action. Many of them are preteens and adolescents or even younger. They don’t know what they are fighting for at that age. They just see others doing something and respond in kind. They want to be part of the action but have not the foggiest idea why other than it’s the thing to do.

Are we in the church going the same direction? Do we allow our people to get worked up in services where the music pumps up the soul and flesh rather than creating a true atmosphere of worship that reveres and glorifies God? Are the people looking for just another “feel good” service to pump up their pride and boost their flesh? Or, are we seeking the face of God, praying to Him, turning from our wickedness, and asking Him to forgive us and heal our land? Where is the true repentance among God’s people that will cause God to send true revival to our nation?

It seems like that as time passes, people are getting caught up in the latest movement or craze among the church circles and ignoring the call of God to true repentance and service to Him! Anymore all I see on TV is the push of some people to unite the various religions into one religion. Others are turning people away from God with hype and promises of “prosperity” in things and money rather than the “prosperity” of having riches stored up in heaven where moth and rust and thieves cannot touch them. People are going for anything that will tickle their ears and stroke their ego. Many people don’t even know why they are in church in the first place. It’s just some new thing to do or the latest craze.

This is all confusion. The Bible teaches us that God is not the author of confusion. He is orderly and just and to be revered. He does things in proper manner and always with decorum. God doesn’t do things haphazardly. All things are thought through. He knows the end from the beginning. So, why do His “people” run around like chickens with heads cut off and have no idea what is going on around them? They are more interested in the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. They are not grounded in the Word of God!! They have no vision and perish accordingly. God help us to take off our spiritual blinkers and see the light of God’s truth.

Prayer:
Father, help me to see the Truth because Jesus is the Way and the Light unto my feet that illuminates the Path to You. I don’t want to be caught up in the next craze that sweeps through the church. I want to be grounded in sound doctrine and hold fast to the cross. Guide me and my family through the milieu that has captured the hearts and minds of weak believers and caused them to be swallowed up in every little thing that tickles their fancy. The apostasy has begun, and many will stray from You because they are caught up in the moment of the latest craze or program sweeping across the land. They don’t even know what they are doing or why things are changing right under their noses because they are shallow. They have no root in the vine. Dad, I love You and rely on You. You have not given us a spirit of confusion but of love, of power, and of a sound mind. Let that be the basis of what anchors me to the cross. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
