Every knee will bow!

Scripture:
When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. – 1 Samuel 5:2

Observation:
Israel battled the Philistines in the time of Eli the high priest. His sons had taken the ark of the covenant out into battle against the Philistines. The enemy defeated Israel’s troops and captured the ark of the covenant. They took it as booty and placed in their temple to their god, Dagon. When the Philistines entered that temple the next day, they found the statue of their god lying on the floor before the Ark of Yahweh!

Application:
Much later in the history of Israel we learn from the OT and NT accounts that one day “every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is LORD!” Now, the Israelites of Samuel’s time didn’t know of Jesus per se. They had not heard the words quoted above. However, we have, and looking back in time to this account of Dagon falling over in front of the Ark of God is interesting.

Elsewhere in the Bible God tells us that He will not share His glory with another. This includes demonic statues, or gods, of other peoples. The first commandment given to Israel at Sinai was that they were to have no other gods before YHWH. He alone is God, and there is none like him. Elsewhere in the Bible we learn that behind every idol there is a demon receiving worship. This reason is why God becomes infuriated with people who go off serving other gods through idolatry. However, to demonstrate His sovereignty among the ancient Philistines, God toppled their statue right in front of His holy presence situated between the cherubim on top of the Ark of the covenant. No god or statue or person can stand before the presence of God and not kneel in submission to Him.

The Bible states twice that every knee in heaven above, on the earth below and beneath the earth will bend before God. Accordingly, no one is supposed to bend the knee to a foreign god or deity or statue or idol, whether that idol is made of wood, stone, metal, plastic, or even a person or idea. God, YHWH, is to reign supreme, and HE DOES! God is calling for a cleansing of His house and His bride and His body.

What area of your life have you not submitted to God? Is there something in your life that serves as a god and detracts from your worship of the Most High? It may be something insignificant that you don’t even realize has become an idol to you: car, house, TV, Internet, radio, music, leisure, money, travel, possessions, people, or even ideas. What have you not given over to God? We have to submit our entire lives to God in order to even be a disciple of Jesus, who told us to deny ourselves, pick up our cross daily, and follow Him. Notice the deny ourselves part. This part requires giving up anything and everything that separates us from God.

God will not take a back seat to anything or anyone. He is supreme and sovereign over everything! Check your heart today. Ask Him to reveal anything that might be competing for His love and attention. His Holy Spirit will show you these things if you are willing to listen.

Prayer:
Father, please show me anything in my life that may or might take away from You! I love You with all of my spirit, soul, and body, and I don’t want to bend the knee before anything or anyone other than You, the Almighty! May my heart be pure before You and washed clean with the water of Your Word that I may be presented before You spotless and without blemish and ready for the marriage supper of the Lamb. I bend the knee to You and cry, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD God Almighty.” May Your name be proclaimed to the whole earth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
