Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. – 1 Kings 4:30
When God had presented the proposition to Solomon of asking for whatever he desired, Solomon requested wisdom with which he could guide and judge God’s people, Israel. This answer pleased God, who made Solomon the wisest person to ever live. The Bible tells us his wisdom surpassed all of the great wisdom of the pagan kingdoms around Israel, including the mighty Egyptians who built the pyramids and sphinx.
When God does something, He does it right. He does it big. God cares about the small things, but He makes big announcements regarding the declaration of His glory! Although Solomon was only a man from the smallest, most insignificant people on earth, God decided to bless Israel with the wisest man in order that he may lead His people. Remember that Israel was God’s chosen inheritance out of all the families on the planet. He handpicked them.
To ensure the success of His people, God orchestrated this scenario. Kings and diplomats from around the globe sought out the wisdom of Solomon. His sage advice put Israel on the map geopolitically and shined a huge spotlight on the God of Israel, who gave Solomon this wisdom.
Infact, God gave Solomon such great wisdom that he designed the temple and all its furnishings. This temple was where God chose to place His name, “My name shall be there” (1 Kings 8:29). Later when Solomon would dedicate the temple, he said, “As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your name—for they will hear of your great name and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm—when they come and pray toward this temple, then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Do whatever the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name” (1 Kings 8:41-43).As God used Egypt through the plagues and Red Sea passage to spread His name and glory in all the earth, He did so also through Solomon’s great wisdom and the temple he built.
Despite all the things Solomon did, there is one wiser than he – Jesus! Jesus gives us the opportunity to make the wisest choice anyone can make but was rejected by Solomon, the wisest and most foolish person to ever live. How is that? He chose not to follow God later on in life and followed after other gods that his wives worshiped. He did not follow in the footsteps of his father, David, and do all that God commanded. Thus, the wisest decision you can make is to love God with all you spirit, soul, and body by accepting His love gift of external life through Jesus the Messiah and our Lord. Do you want to be wiser than Solomon? Then make Jesus your Lord and Savior. Love Him. Obey Him. Follow Him.
Father, thank You for allowing me to make the wisest decision I could ever make – following You and loving You with all of me. I actually feel sorry for Solomon because in all his wisdom he rejected You. He became self-sufficient and self-reliant and followed self-counsel because he thought he knew it all and had done it all. He forgot Who gave him his brilliant wisdom and wealth and well-being. His pride became his downfall. Help me to not got the way of Solomon and Satan. Help me to remain humble in Your eyes and willing to serve You. May Your name be exalted in all the earth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
