If I gave everything I have …but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. – 1 Corinthians 13:3
Paul writes the greatest definition of who God is and what love does. The one thing that he noted that made a connection with me is that without love I am nothing. Even if I gave all that I have and am without loving others, I have gained nothing! In other words without love — God — I am nothing!
Let’s take a moment to think about John 3:16 in light of Paul’s definition above. John wrote that “God so loved the world that He gave his [one and only] Son that whosoever believes on Him would not perish but have everlasting life.” Now, let’s substitute Paul’s definition from above. IF God gave all that He has, Jesus, without loving us, then no one would believe and would perish without everlasting life. This take makes us look at the truth of what love is, who love is, and what happens without Him.
John wrote in a letter, “God is love.” Thus, we know that love written about by Paul actually describes attributes of God and actions God does for us. God so love us that He gave everything He has for us! His example of love shows that love acts. Love is motion, love is active, love is! Now, if God had given us Jesus without love (Himself), what would He have gained? This next statement may rock your theology a bit but look at it from the Truth of God’s Word! If God had given Jesus as a sacrifice for us without LOVE, He would not have gained us as His children. He would have merely sacrificed His Son, as had been any other bull, goat, sheep, or bird. His blood would have been pointless other than temporary atonement of sin!
However, because God gave His Son for the payment of our sins BECAUSE He love us, His blood was not wasted! His blood was able to do what animals could not — save mankind from eternal death and restore the Father-child relationship between The I AM WHO I AM and us. Let us learn from God’s own example of demonstrating love in that giving everything requires an act of love to coincide with that event. Otherwise, we have gained nothing! We have given everything in vain pride and self-seeking glory if we act without love — hence God!
Father, help me to always extend Your love and grace to all around me. Show me how to walk this life in love and simultaneously give myself completely for my family, friends, and neighbors. Teach me by Your Holy Spirit the act of selfless love that the world cannot perceive. I’ve given all of me to You; thus, I want to share all of what You’ve given me with others through acts of love and generosity. ALL blessings that I’ve received from You are not for my benefit alone but for the betterment of others and the advancement of Your kingdom. May Your will be done, not mine. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
