There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: – Proverbs 6:16
Solomon writes in this chapter there are six things God hates and seven He detests. First on that list is pride then followed by lying, shedding innocent blood, scheming heart, those who rush to evil, and a false witness. These six the LORD hates and detests, but the seventh He detests more than the rest – one who sows discord among the brethren.
This list from Solomon is by no means exhaustive because the prophet Malachi tells us that God hates divorce, too. However, we can look at this list and take away a very crucial point: God detests people who stir up trouble among the church. Pride took down Lucifer and got him exiled from heaven for eternity. That hated item tops the list, but it doesn’t create trouble on the same level as stirring up trouble.
People who stir up dissension among church goers usually employ any or all of these “tactics” to achieve their goal. Often time such a person is proud, lies to get people roused up, plots evil against one or more people in the church, is quick to spread gossip or do one harm, and sure to bear a false witness. They most likely would not shed innocent blood, but it is not beyond their capability.
Sure, God hates it when anyone would do any of these evil things, but using them to cause division in the church really fires up His jealous anger! Why? Because that person attacks His body and essentially “spreads” disease among the church members that causes great damage spiritually, soulfully, and even physically. Also, the perpetrator is attacking God’s bride. What man would not protect his bride from a stranger or would be attacker? Reread the end of Proverbs 6, and you will see what happens! God will protect His body and bride! He is a jealous God, and His name is Jealous! As the writer of Hebrews put it so succinctly, “It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
God, I used to be a proud and arrogant person. I lied a lot in my day. I bore false witness against people. I’ve shed innocent blood through agreeing to an abortion. I plotted evil against people many times and schemed against them too. I may have even sowed discord among the brethren, all of which You hate. However, I am ever grateful that I have confessed all those sins to You, and I am even more grateful that You were faithful and just to forgive those sins and to cleanse from all the wrong I had done. I pray for those who do such things and that they find Your mercy and grace and forgiveness, as I did. IF there are those who stir up trouble in our church, please convict them. IF they won’t submit to Your conviction, them evict them until they do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
