…of all that you give me I will give you a tenth. – Genesis 22:28b
Abraham gave a tenth (tithe) of all he had to the king of Salem, Melchizedek, after rescuing Lot from his captors. Two generations later we see his grandson, Jacob, offering to give God a tithe of all he will have as God blesses him.
People get wrapped around the axle over giving to God. They think that giving a tithe is OT (which it is) and “under the Law.” Well, may I remind everyone that the Law of Moses would not even surface from the hand of God for another 400 years or so after this time. The tithe predates the Law and subscribes to the point that Paul made in the NT that Abraham was credited with righteousness because of his faith in God not strict observance of a law!
If people want to learn to have and live a blessed life, then they need to learn the art and privilege of “tithing” to God. May I remind you of the Holy Spirit-inspired, God-breathed words penned by David much later in time, But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. (1 Chron 29:14) If God hadn’t given you what you have, you’d have nothing at all!
Do you think it’s right for those who are recipients of God’s mercy and grace – which are free! – to hold back from giving to Him what’s His already?!? People, wake up! Just as God said through Malachi, you rob Him in tithes and offerings. Sure, there was a mandate under the Law to give a tithe, but go back to the beginning with Abraham and Jacob and learn the truth. Then couple that with David’s God-breathed words. “Your” money isn’t even yours. It belongs to God! Learn to tithe, and enjoy the blessing that comes with it. If in doubt, read the book of Malachi and trust in God’s promise.
Father, I thank You that I am not in want and dire straits as many people are these days. So many of Your children live from one misery to the next because they have not learned the art and blessing of giving to You and to others. They don’t understand that obedience to You always brings blessing. I pray that Your people would take notice and change their ways. IF they did, then there would be greater assets to be used for the advancement for Your kingdom. Shame on those ministers who line their pockets with vast hoards of wealth that Your people bring into the storehouse instead of using it for Your glory. A worker is worth his wage, but many “workers” are stealing from the house of God. Have mercy upon them. May Your will be done. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
