God spoke to Jacob and told him to relocate his family to Bethel, where Jacob had built and dedicated an altar to God. When Jacob informed his family of their impending departure, he instructed them to put away the strange gods they had with them, cleanse themselves ceremonially, and to change their clothes. They were about to move to a place dedicated to God and called the House of God, Bethel.
It’s amazing that this message still speaks loudly to us today. God spoke throughout the whole of the Bible that He is jealous; Jealous is His name. He will not have any other gods before Him. Yahweh will not share His glory with anyone or anything. Thus, He expelled Lucifer from heaven for trying to dethrone Him. However, even in this age of grace, people still dethrone God in their hearts. They refuse to step down from the throne of their lives and submit them to God.
Jacob’s words of removing the strange gods…among you include one’s pride and arrogance or any other person, thing, or idea that stands between you and your Creator. Again, his reference to being clean and [changing] your garments speaks of consecrating our lives to God and being holy as He is holy, just as the Bible tells us to do Is there a god in your life that detracts from your total and complete devotion to the One true God, Jehovah? If so, heed the words of Jacob and remove them. Don’t just remove them, but smash them to pieces. If the god interfering with your divine relationship is yourself, then humble yourself before God and repent of your behavior.
God is looking for a bride that is spotless, without wrinkle, and watching for His return. We cannot make ourselves spotless and wrinkle-free, but His blood can. We must remember that He makes us whole and pure, but we can refuse to allow sin to creep into our lives or allow things to become gods to us, especially when God is above all gods. Trust in the One, true God, Jehovah.
Father, please show me if there is anything in my life that has been occupying your proper and rightful place on the throne of my heart. Whatever it may be, I will tear down that altar and demolish it! You are my God! There is none like You! None will come before You!! I worship You, and You alone. Thank You for loving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
