Then you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall make the trumpet to sound throughout all your land. – Leviticus 25:9
As we close out the book of Leviticus, we read the words of God to Moses regarding the event known as the Jubilee. This event occurred once every 50 years on Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. The idea was that if people sold their possessions or self to other members of Israel to pay off debts, the debt would last until the year of Jubilee. At that time, the land sold would be returned to its rightful owner, indentured servants would be set free, and debts would be cancelled. It speaks of the coming of Jesus, who cancelled our sin debt through His death, burial and resurrection. The atonement of our sins by His blood is trumpet worthy!
The news of our Savior’s sin-atoning sacrifice for the sins of many is worthy of blowing trumpets to the fullest on a daily basis. Although God established a pattern of debt cancellation and an example of His mercy, grace, and provision for the Hebrews to follow, He foreshadowed the grace we, His children, would receive through the atonement of our sins through Jesus.
When we live in sin, we are indebted to sin. It holds a grip on us as master and lord. We must do as sin dictates; however, God set in place a process of redemption through the blood of Jesus. To those He has chosen, He has given the power to become the sons of God in Jesus. When the blood of Jesus through God’s grace in faith saves us, the debt of sin that bound us is paid in full.
As indebted slaves of sin and without Messiah, we are bound for hell with no questions asked. God will one day judge people for their works in this life: some unto everlasting life and others unto everlasting torment. If there is but one violation of His holy Law, then we would be found guilty and sentenced eternally to death, spiritual death in the lake of fire with satan, the beast, the false, prophet, death, grave, and all those who rejected the call of God to be His children.
When Jesus died for us, His sinless blood paid the bail notice for us and granted us a pardon from sin’s control. God then recognizes His Son’s blood on our criminal record and deems it paid in full and grants us access into His family and kingdom. This news is worthy of blowing trumpets and announcing the freedom that comes to one who was bound in prison of sin. Heaven rejoices every time a person is saved!
Do you want to be set free from sin’s grip? Then examine your heart. Then listen to the still, small voice in your heart telling you that you need to be forgiven of your sins and accept the sin-atoning work of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Then, believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and call on the LORD Jesus. He will come and set up home in your heart and celebrate the Jubilee of your salvation! You’ll no longer be sin’s prisoner.
Father, oh that the trump of joy and jubilee were sounded daily! In heaven I know there is constant rejoicing and blowing of the trump when the lost sheep finally comes home to Jesus, the great shepherd. I can think of the day when my personal jubilee occurred many years ago. Then I think back on the day that I repented of my sins and again made a commitment to You and to trust in You as my LORD and Savior. Those days give me cause for celebration because I am no longer bound as a slave to sin. You released me from that prison and made me a free citizen of heaven and Your adopted son. My heart breaks, though, because of the billions of people in this world who don’t live in covenant relationship with You. They don’t know the freedom of being set free from sin’s grip of death. Help me to reach as many lost sheep as possible that they too may know the jubilation of eternal life and freedom in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
