An example of God’s promise coming true.

Scripture:
The people of Judah were taken captive to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness. Now the first to resettle on their own property in their own towns were some Israelites, priests, Levites and temple servants. – 1 Chronicles 9:1-2

Observation:
Among the listings of the families of Israel, we read in chapter 9 that the people of Judah had been expelled from God’s presence as had Israel decades before them. The prophet Jeremiah prophesied that a remnant of people of Israel would return to inhabit their homeland and be restored as God’s inheritance. In verse 2 of this chapter we read that there were some Israelites who returned to Judah and resettled the land, thus fulfilling God’s promise to never leave or abandon His inheritance. He cast them aside for a while as a nation, but He always maintained a remnant of true believers who worshiped Him.

Application:
In a series of chapters where there are numerous listings of family histories and not much in the way of narrative, it is refreshing to read a short quip where God stayed true to His Word. Moses told us that God is the faithful God. Throughout the entirety of the Bible, there is not one promise on which God has not fulfilled it! There are prophecies yet to be fulfilled, but God’s Word has always come to pass! It doesn’t fail its mission. Even though this short passage of two verses seems rather simple, it speaks volumes to me today! I can trust in the Word of God and know that His promises will come to pass! They may take a while, but they will happen. Jeremiah said that 70 years would pass before the remnant returned to Judah, and 70 years after their exile, they did! God is true. He loves His people and wants to bless them. We just have to believe and faint not.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for speaking to me out of this rather dry portion of scripture. I know in my head that You inspired every word of the text and placed things there for a reason; however, this short passage jumped off the page at me and spoke of the vastness of Your love, patience, and faithfulness to Your people. Help me to walk in that type of love and mercy and grace with all mankind. Help me to be faithful to friends and family and never give up on others as I have in the past. Help me to see the value in every person and discount anyone, for You have a plan and purpose for every person. Help me to see others as You do and be committed to them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
