My servant David will be their king, and they will have only one shepherd. They will obey my regulations and be careful to keep my decrees. They will live in the land I gave my servant Jacob, the land where their ancestors lived. They and their children and their grandchildren after them will live there forever, generation after generation. And my servant David will be their prince forever. – Ezekiel 37:24-25
God had shown a vision to the prophet, Ezekiel, in which an entire valley of dead bones came to life, were rejoined, and were covered in flesh again to make them come alive. Then the LORD told him to take to sticks and join them together, so that when asked he could tell people that God was going to rejoin the two nations of Israel, Samaria and Judah! They would be reunited and remade into God’s one chosen people!
As God told the prophet the coming reunification of Israel into one nation again, he told him that David would be their king and prince. There would be one shepherd to take care of God’s people. The truth of the matter is there is only One Prince – Jesus! He is the King of kings! He will one day come to establish his rightful place as the heir of David and assume his role as King over the earth! He will sit on the throne of his father, David, although he sits at the right hand of his Father’s throne in heaven at this time…..
Jesus is the good shepherd. The LORD says in many places throughout the Bible that HE will shepherd his people and care for them, both Jew and Gentile. It is as David wrote, the LORD is my Shepherd…. The LORD cares for all of his people, all who are called by his name and according to his purpose. Not everyone who says LORD, LORD will be or is a part of the family of God. There are many false prophets among God’s people, who appear as sheep like the rest of God’s people but really are ravenous wolves looking to devour as many sheep as possible.
The beauty of it all though is that Jesus will take authority over his creation and establish himself as King! He is the rightful heir to the throne of David. In Matt 1:1 the good doctor tells us that Jesus is of the lineage of Abraham and of David. Here are some other passages from the Bible, both OT and NT, that confirm Jesus’ rightful ascension the throne of David, as God promised…..
- Psalm 132:11
The LORD swore an oath to David with a promise he will never take back: “I will place one of your descendants on your throne.
- Isaiah 9:7
His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from thethrone of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!
- Isaiah 11:10
In that day the heir to David’s throne will be a banner of salvation to all the world. The nations will rally to him, and the land where he lives will be a glorious place.
- Jeremiah 17:25
then kings and their officials will go in and out of these gates forever. There will always be a descendant of David sitting on the throne here in Jerusalem. Kings and their officials will always ride in and out among the people of Judah in chariots and on horses, and this city will remain forever.
- Jeremiah 33:17
For this is what the LORD says: David will have a descendant sitting on the throne of Israel forever.
- Luke 1:32
He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him thethrone of his ancestor David.
- Acts 2:30
But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne.
- Romans 15:12
And in another place Isaiah said, “The heir to David’s throne will come, and he will rule over the Gentiles. They will place their hope on him.”
- Revelation 5:5
But one of the twenty-four elders said to me, “Stop weeping! Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne, has won the victory. He is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
- Revelation 22:16
“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the churches. I am both the source ofDavid and the heir to his throne. I am the bright morning star.”
Do we need any more proof? Let’s all watch for the return of the King of kings, the King of Israel, the Prince of Israel, the Son of God, the Son of Man, the Son of David!
Father, Oh what a glorious day it will be when my Jesus I shall see, as LORD and King and Ruler and Father and Prince and Creator! You must have great anticipation to assume your rightful place atop the throne of your father, David, as well as being loved and worshiped by those who you’ve called and chosen as your children, family, body, and bride forever! I look forward to being united with all my brothers and sisters, both Jew and Gentile – of every tribe, kindred, tongue and nation. What I see in the passage today is that your word promised long ago will come to pass. You will establish your Son, Jesus, as Lord of all the earth. No one will be able to resist his power and authority, for it comes directly from you! Oh the love, joy, and peace that will rule the earth when you sit on the throne of David and rule the world. And as the apostle wrote so long ago, we cry, Come Lord Jesus. Amen.
