Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. – Revelation 3:22
Seven times in the course of the opening of the book of Revelation, Jesus used the words Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. This coincides with the fact that he spoke seven different messages to seven different churches, all of whom had an issue in their walk with Jesus. He pointed out to each congregation their issue and how they could and should rectify it. Then, that message served to warn all believers of future times how to deal with those issues in life should they experience them.
Do you hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches today? Jesus said it early in this passage. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He is the God who was, is, and will be. He is truth and life and the way. He stands at the door of our hearts and asks to come in and be with us, yet we often reject him and leave him standing on the outside. When the 20th verse of Revelation 3 was written it wasn’t for unbelievers but for those of the church of Laodicea – believers!
We had best learn to be sensitive to the voice of God through his Holy Spirit. The saddest part of it all is the Holy Spirit lives inside the heart of every believer – Do you not know that you are the temple of the Holy Spirit? When we spend time communing with God through prayer and study of his Word, we “hear” the voice of God speaking to us, generally. We can become so hard-hearted that we reject the voice of God in our lives and miss out on what he has planned for us.
The prophet Isaiah wrote of the Jews that they had ears that are always listening but never hear and eyes that are always seeing but never see! How can that be? They have physical ears and eyes that take in the world around them, but their spiritual ears and eyes are deaf and blind to the things of God. What are you hearing and seeing? Do you hear God’s Spirit talking to you? Do you see the things he’s given you to do for his kingdom? Take a spiritual cotton swab to your ears and a spiritual warm wash cloth to your eyes and get rid of the eye boogers!
Listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying to the current church and do what he says!
Father, help me to open my eyes and ears more to your will and Spirit. For too long most of us have done what we want and ignored or rejected your will. I don’t want to be like the believers of the early churches. I don’t want to be like the ancient Jews who rebelled against you and refused you. They were ever hearing and seeing but didn’t do what you said. Help me to be more like your wonderful Son, Jesus, who only did what he saw from you and heard you say. As he said before his tragic last night on earth, not my will but your will be done! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
