O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. – Psalm 8:1
David wrote this psalm in praise to the LORD. He speaks of the wonders of the night sky and comments on the LORD’s handiwork, yet he rhetorically asks why God would mind himself with mankind? In the grand scheme of things David could see and knew that the LORD’s glory fills the earth. David had an intimate relationship with his God and understood the beauty of God’s work and compassion for his entire creation, including mankind – the greatest creation of all.
Even though humanity is God’s greatest creation, there is nothing in us that is of innate worth. All that we are is because of Jesus and his righteousness. He is the almighty God and doesn’t share his glory with anyone or anything. That is why there is no other god before him. Even Dagon, the god of the Phillistines, fell over and bowed to the God of heaven when the Ark of the Covenant was brought into his temple.
One thing we could learn from the singer-song writer, David, is that God’s glory is the greatest. His majestic name alone fills the earth! The heavens alone cannot contain God! Thus we can see how just the name of God could fill the entire earth! What majesty! What awesomeness! Like the psalmist, we could stand to give God praise and honor and glory due his name! He is worthy to be praised above all else! Let us give thanks to the God above, who created us, loved us, and gave himself for us! We have every reason to exalt the name of God! His one and only Son, Jesus, took on our sins and bore our sorrows and suffered the worst execution possible to pay the price you and I should have had to pay for our rebellion against the Father. Fortunately for us, the Spirit of God raised Jesus from the dead and overcame the obstacle that separated us from the love of the Father. We now can have a personal, intimate relationship with God, just as Adam had in the beginning of time.
Father, what can I say but, “You are the greatest! I love you!! I adore you!! I give all my praise to You!” There really is nothing else to do but sing and shout our praises to you You alone are worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. There is none above you. You are the Lord of lords and King of kings. I bow to your majesty and power. Thank you for sharing your endless love with me and redeeming me from the terrible fate that awaits those that reject your love gift through Jesus. O magnificent God of heaven’s armies, YOU are my Father, friend, and faithful companion. Without you, I am nothing. Thus, I bestow upon you, today, all my love and praise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
