I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. – Psalm 119:11
David wrote the longest “chapter” in the Bible when he authored this psalm. He didn’t know it would it would be such, but it is. It contains great wisdom on how to be holy and live right before God. There are nuggets of life-giving instruction throughout the course of this piece. God’s Spirit inspired him to write this psalm as a guideline for future generation of believers. Even Jesus would later model the wisdom contained in the verse selected for today.
When the devil tempted Jesus during his lifetime, Jesus always countered the devil with the phrase, “It is written…” and then quoted the appropriate portion of scripture that deflated satan’s power. David had learned this wisdom early in his life. He was offered the life of Saul more than once and could have exacted justice on his enemy, but David refused to break the Lord’s commands. He knew that the anointed of God were not to be touched because they were the chosen of God. Thus, David refused to kill his enemy because God has anointed Saul king over Israel. He even went so far as to repent of his cutting off a portion of Saul’s robe. He knew the Word of God and obeyed it. He enjoyed God’s blessing and favor because He obeyed his Word. If David had not learned and tucked away God’s word in his heart, he could have and most likely would have violated it and sinned against God.
Therefore, we need to heed David’s instruction and practice it as did Jesus when tempted to do wrong. Jesus told us that the Truth we know will set us free. When we know in our heart the word of God, we are able by the Spirit’s power to counter any attack or temptation that the devil throws at us.
Father, I’ve learned a lot of scripture over the years, particularly these last four years as I’ve studied and devoted time to reading your Word. Help me to bring to my memory the Word when I need it to help me and keep me from sinning against you. It’s not enough to just have scripture memorized in my brain and then not have it written upon my heart. Head knowledge does nothing to keep me holy and humble before you. It takes my being sensitive to your Spirit when he speaks to me and teaches me to do right and thereby avoid temptation. Strengthen me in my weak areas. Help me to walk in your righteousness by faith in Jesus. I want to live holy before you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
