Everything said must be truth, but not every truth needs said.

Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. – Genesis 37:5

When Joe was a teenager, God shared some future things about his life through dreams. Joe got careless and went bragging to this 10 older brothers about the dreams. His brothers knew immediately that the dreams referred to them bowing down in homage to Joe at some future time. This idea really burned them inside to the point that they would later plot his death. God spared his life from his brother’s plot and would later use those events to save his family and eventually all mankind.

Joe got a message from God about things that would later transpire in his life. God had showed him that one day his brothers, and again later even his parents, would bow down to him in homage. His whole family rebuked him for his arrogance and for flaunting these ideas. Sure, what God told him was true and would later transpire, but Joe didn’t need to go running his mouth so arrogantly before his brothers and parents. If he had been quiet, though, he never would have been sent to Egypt where he later saved his family from death by starvation and perpetuated the promise of Abe that through his descendants the world would be blessed. On the other hand, Joe could have avoided such harsh treatment from his brothers had he exercised a little more wisdom and discretion in the revelation of his dreams.

Again, everything said must be truth, but not every truth need be said. Trust God to give you the wisdom to know when to speak and when not to run your mouth. It may just save you a lot of grief.

Father, I’m asking you for the wisdom to know when to speak and when not to speak. I’ve ran my mouth in the past and said things out of turn that have caused the listener and me great trouble and grief. I can see the wisdom in knowing when to share things with others and when to just shut up. Everything you share with me about the future is not meant for all to hear until the appointed time. If there are those that need to hear it before its coming, then please show who they are. I don’t want to birth any Ishmaels or cause others to do so because they hear a word from God that wasn’t  meant for them to hear at that time. May your will be done and not mine. To the glory of your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
