At that time the Spirit of the LORD will come powerfully upon you, and you will…be changed into a different person.
Samuel had anointed Saul king over Israel per the Lord’s instructions. The prophet gave the new king a message about things that would soon happen to him as he returned home: receiving bread from a man, meeting a group of prophets, having God’s Spirit come upon him, and prophesying once God’s Spirit came to him. Samuel told Saul that he would be changed and made into a different person once the Spirit came.
Have you ever given much thought to the idea that you are a changed person once God’s Spirit comes to live in you? The apostle Paul told us that we were once sinners, but now that we have received God’s gift of eternal life through Jesus, we are a new creature. The old things have passed away. The apostle also instructed us that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit, who Jesus promised to us once he ascended into heaven. Thus, at conversion, we are not only given eternal life but become a changed. It happens all that the same time – conversion means change from one thing to another. When you are redeemed, the Spirit of God establishes his home in you and thereby changes your spirit into a new person. The soul and flesh will still go through a process of being made more like Christ, but your spirit is instantly changed! WOW! The beauty is that since Jesus’ time, the Spirit comes to live inside the hearts of his children not just “come upon” people like he did in the OT days, hence Saul, David, Moses, and the other prophets and individuals who experienced him back then. The Spirit seals us until the day of redemption as a sign that we are God’s children. It’s permanent.
Father, thank you for the greatest gifts that anyone could ever receive: everlasting love and grace, eternal life through the sacrifice of Jesus, and the indwelling of your Spirit in every disciple of Jesus. You wouldn’t allow your Spirit to be given out to everyone prior to the sacrifice of the Lamb. Jesus in the flesh could only be at one place at one time; however, that has all changed! You gave your Spirit to us to teach us and guide us and comfort us and most of all to change us from sinners damned for eternity into children of your light to spend eternity with you. What a privilege and honor! We get to praise and worship you for all eternity because you changed us when we heeded your beckoning to become your sons and daughters. I am so grateful that you have chosen me as one of your own. May your will be done through all of your children. I love you, Dad. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
