God’s unfailing love.

And he prayed, “O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in all of heaven above or on the earth below. You keep your covenant and show unfailing love to all who walk before you in wholehearted devotion.” – 1 Kings 8:23

Solomon’s people had finished the Temple, and he held a great ceremony before the whole of the nation to offer it in dedication to the LORD God of Israel. In this passage we read the long narrative of a prayer that Solomon offered up to God at this time. In the opening of the prayer, he acknowledged God’s supremacy and unfailing love for his true people.

Isn’t it interesting how Solomon informs us that under the OT, or covenant, God showed himself faithful to those who walked wholeheartedly in devotion to God? The judgment of God was swift in those days because they lived under the curse of the Law. Today, however, we have received a new and better covenant through the blood of Jesus that takes away the curse of the Law. The even great point of interest is that even under the NT, God still shows himself faithful to those who walk wholeheartedly in devotion to him. The beauty of this point is that God is the same today as he was yesterday or will be tomorrow. He is the faithful God; he never changes. The covenant may have changed, but God hasn’t. His unfailing love is still available today. Through his steadfastness, he proves that there is no God like him in all of heaven or on earth.

Father, you are the great and mighty God of all the universe. There is none like you! You are worthy to be praised and to receive glory, honor, and power, as your words tells us. Thank you for being unchanging in who you are and for showing your unfailing love to so many people, including me. Where would I be without You? We both know I’d be dead and screaming in the eternal tormenting flames of hell. Please continue to show me your great love and simultaneously teach me how to share it to all around me. I want to be more like you daily. You are the only example I need to follow, for you set the best example while you walked here on earth in the flesh. I love you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
