God’s word will come to pass.

Scripture:
It was during his reign that Hiel, a man from Bethel, rebuilt Jericho. When he laid its foundations, it cost him the life of his oldest son, Abiram. And when he completed it and set up its gates, it cost him the life of his youngest son, Segub. This all happened according to the message from the Lord concerning Jericho spoken by Joshua son of Nun. – 1 Kings 16:34

Observation:
Ahab became king over Israel. He did more evil than any king before him, and most likely after him. The Lord despised the family of Ahab for all of the sins they caused Israel to commit. Thus, the Lord eventually wiped out the house of Ahab. During his reign, though, a man named Hiel rebuilt the city of Jericho, which God prophesied through Joshua son of Nun would cost that person the lives of his oldest and youngest. That prediction was made before Israel ever settled the land of Canaan, some hundreds of years before.

Application:
People had better take the word of the LORD seriously. Many people hear the word of God and refuse to listen. The one thing we know about God’s word is that it never fails its mission and will accomplish what God set it out to do. Thus, if God said the man who rebuilt Jericho would lose his sons, then he had best heeded God’s word. But over time, people get lazy and forget things spoken to them by God whether for their good or downfall. Obviously Hiel had either never heard of Joshua’s prophecy or just totally defied God’s word. Either way, he lost his sons over his arrogance and saw the word of the LORD come to pass. I have read and heard God’s word for a long time. I want to be sure that I do what God’s word says. Why? Because Jesus himself said that his disciples are those that hear his word and do it. It’s not good enough to just hear the word of God, by which faith comes, but we must obey it. Faith in action is the key, otherwise our faith is dead.

Prayer:
Father, help me to put into action all that you’ve told me to do. Help me to apply your word to my life daily. I don’t want to be a sponge that soaks up the truth of your word only to hoard it and watch it become manna infested with maggots that rots in the pot. Simply put, I don’t need you to increase my faith but to be obedient and put it into action. Thank you for the heads up today. I needed it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
