Then your servant said, ‘Please let my lord the king say something that will give me relief; for my lord the king is like an angel of God in discerning good from bad — and may Adonai your God be with you.’ – 2 Samuel 14:17 (CJB)
Absalom killed his brother Amnon in revenge for raping their sister, Tamar. When David found out about the situation, he banished Absalom from Israel. Four years went by and Joab the commander of David’s army called for the return of Absalom to Israel. He employed a woman known for her wisdom to speak to the king in the matter of his son’s return from exile. During their conversation, David stopped to ask the lady if Joab had put her up to it. She admitted he had and then told the king that he was as wise as an angel of God in discerning good from bad.
We know that God imparts the gifts of the Holy Spirit as God the Holy Spirit deems, and can move upon the hearts and minds of believers to receive them as seen in the recent doctrinal reversal on the gift of tongues among the Baptist conventions.
Even in the OT people like David operated in the gifts of the Spirit when God the Holy Spirit was upon them. We have to recall that the author of 1 Samuel wrote that the Spirit of God came upon David very strongly when he was anointed king of Israel. The Spirit of God never left David as he did from King Saul. In this story we see clearly that David in his questioning of this lady operated in the charismatic gifts of knowledge and discernment. There is no doubt about this fact.
Accordingly, Paul admonished us to seek the greater gifts like prophecy to encourage, equip, and edify the body of Christ. The gifts of God the Holy Spirit are not or were not just for the 1st Century believers, as many claimed and still claim. They are for all believers and are allotted to the children of God the Father as God the Holy Spirit deems necessary. Even the prophet Joel, who followed David by centuries, wrote that in the last days God the Holy Spirit “will pour out my Spirit on all humanity. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions; and also on male and female slaves in those days I will pour out my Spirit.” (Joel 3:1-2)
For as Paul wrote, there are many parts to the body and all parts have their function. How can a body part function if it doesn’t have the necessary skills to do so? It can’t! The Spirit of God, however, gives us those skills as part of his gifts to make the body of Christ work effectively and efficiently. Therefore, I urge you brothers and sisters, heed the admonishment of the apostle Paul and seek the Holy Spirit for the greater gifts and any gift he presents to you. It is needed in these last days for the children of God to survive the coming holocaust on the earth and more importantly to empower Jesus’ disciples to be his witnesses to the world and demonstrate his glory and power to unbelievers!
Father, thank you for the promised gift of your Holy Spirit, who is God the Holy Spirit. You entrust us with the needed gifts to make the body of Christ function and function properly. Please fulfill the end part of your promise to pour yourself out upon all flesh and to cause the sons and daughters to prophesy, old men to dream, and young men to see visions. The body is under attack from all sides, Father; we need your grace. It is truly more than enough to sustain us and empower us through your Spirit to be bold witnesses unto this lost world. Open the hearts and minds of your children and give unto those who seek you the giftings we need and desire to fulfill your mission in the earth of converting the lost, making them into disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Trinity, and teaching them all you commanded the apostles. May your will be done on the earth, not ours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
