When there is moral rot within a nation, its government topples easily. But wise and knowledgeable leaders bring stability. – Proverbs 28:2
The wise author notes that there are many things that bring disgrace upon a person. There are no bounds to whom folly comes or wisdom can prosper. The author even remarks here in 28:2 that a nation can be toppled easily because of moral rot, or when there is no morality at all.
Paul taught us in his letters to pray for the leaders of our nation that they may have wisdom from God to know how to lead the people. The very reason Solomon was blessed with such vast knowledge and wisdom was that he asked God for wisdom to lead the nation of Israel rather than for fame or fortune. Wisdom is a large part of our moral system of beliefs that guide us to do what is right in the eyes of God. It is no wonder that when corruption enters the hearts of our leaders that the country begins to fall. Greed, malice, anger, rage, lust for power or fame, these are the things that begin to rot the heart of person in power. They taste of the temporary satisfaction that comes from being able to control and force people to do the things they want rather than what is , best for the people. Unfortunately, the people begin to idolize their leaders and begin to behave as their leaders do. The ultimate consequence is that nation will fall because the wise author stated elsewhere that pride goes before destruction and arrogance before a fall. Is it any wonder then that a nation of proud, arrogant, corrupt leaders would not fall?
Father, thank you for your wisdom. You give it to all who will ask you with a sincere heart and are in true need of your guidance. We recognize the truth of the situation and realize that we cannot do what lies ahead of us without your guidance. Your wisdom teaches us the right way to do things and thereby establishes a sense of moral values within us. When we neglect or refuse to follow your ways, we see the sinful nature of man rise up and begin to tear down the moral fabric of society. It in logical then that the people will become corrupt and morally depraved and see their sins overcome them and bring about the downfall. Lord, I ask that you give our leaders wisdom to lead this nation back to a heart of repentance and to turn from our national sins and bring life, your life, back into our people and see the restoration of worship of Yahweh in our midst once more. Father, your will be done, not ours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
