Come and dine, the Master calleth, come and dine.

Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink — even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk — it’s all free! Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food. – Isaiah 55:1-2

The prophet speaks here of the Lord and his offer to anyone who will hunger and thirst after the real food. He says to come and dine regardless of whether the person has money or not. The idea is that the Lord will provide not just food for the body but food for the spirit.

Jesus quoted and referred to this passage twice in his lifetime that we have record. The first is in the Sermon on the Mount where he states that those who “hunger and thirst after righteousness shall be filled.” Jesus didn’t speak of earthly hunger and thirst but of the hunger and thirst that only a desperate soul in search of life, real life, can obtain from the Giver of life, who is life Himself.

The second time we hear Jesus speak of this passage is when he says that those who want to live must eat of his body and drink of his blood. The Jews wanted to stone him to death because he spoke of this passage from Isaiah, for they knew it meant to be a reference of the Messiah, the Son of God! However, Jesus knows that people would have to partake of his body and his blood, which he would shed on the cross as payment for our sins in order that we may have eternal life. Without his sacrifice, there can be no remission of our sins.

Therefore, the Lord through the prophet and through His Son call us to come and dine at the Master’s table, where there is life forevermore! He knows that it is impossible for humanity to pay the debt owed for sin and still be a part of His family and be redeemed to Him. Thus, he gives us His Son to fill that void. He says come hungry and thirsty for the things of God and be filled with life and love that can’t be found anywhere in this world. Will you join me at the Master’s table and be filled with the true bread of life and the living water that will quench your thirst forever? Believe that God raised Jesus from the dead by his Spirit and admit, “Jesus is LORD!” and join the family. Are you hungry?? Are you thirst?? Come and dine, the Master calleth, come and dine!

Father, thank you for the bread of life and the living water that will fill me forever and quench my spiritual thirst and fill my spiritual hunger. It can only be done through the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus, who willingly gave Himself for me while I was yet a sinner! There is no greater love than for Him to have laid down His life for His friend, me?!? Yes, you call me friend and brother, son and servant. I am amazed at your never-ending love and grace and mercy! You gave it all for me that I might be filled with life everlasting instead of just trying to fill this stomach with food and drink that will one day perish and return to the dust from which it came. I love You — DAD! Your will be done, not mine. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
