These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word. – Isaiah 66:2b
Isaiah ends the book that would be titled with his name with a declaration from the Lord. In his writing the prophet notes the type of people whom the Lord will favor. He lists two types: the humble with a contrite spirit and those who tremble at His word.
Are you and I in either or both of these groups? We should be in both! Let’s learn to emulate the brokenness of David in Psalm 51 when he cried out to God to remove the shame and guilt of his sin for having murdered a man and stolen his wife in an adulterous affair. When our sins confront us by the conviction of the Holy Spirit, we need to immediately turn to God in repentance and in true repentance at that!
Secondly, we need to learn to revere the word of God, for the apostle John taught us that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God and the Word was with God. Well, we know that Word to be none other than Jesus! We need to revere not only his name but God the Son, Jesus, who is LORD! We will all bow the knee before him and declare his sovereignty as LORD!
Therefore, let us learn to do as Micah said and walk humbly before our God so that, as Peter said, God will raise us up in his timing while we are revering the sovereignty and majesty of our LORD and Savior, Yeshua HaMashiach! You don’t look for the favor of God but enjoy it as you are obedient to the Word! He will favor you! Look to the one who gives favor!
Father, thank you for the Word, your Son, JESUS! Without him there is nothing! Thank you for giving him to us as the ultimate gift of love that brings us eternal life and a redeemed eternity with you! I want to walk in humility before you all the rest of my days as I revere you and your Son and the Holy Spirit. May your will be done, not mine. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
