Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly ways, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls. But you reply, “No, that’s not the road we want!”
Jeremiah the prophet gave a message to both Israel and Judah of the coming judgment from God against them. He repeatedly told the people to turn back to God, just as God had told him to say. Again and again they refused to listen to the oracle of God and eventually imprisoned him for speaking the truth of God’s word regarding their impending doom and exile. They never listened to the prophet. God wooed them back to him again and again to no avail until the Jews had been in exile for 70 years.
How long will the people of this nation, USA, continue to refuse to humble themselves and pray and seek God? God promised that if we, who are called by his name – his children and disciples – would do just that, humble ourselves, pray, and turn from our wicked ways, then God will hear from heaven and forgive our sins and heal our land. It is not incumbent on the leaders of the land to do so but us, the family of the living God! We prophesy and warn this nation to turn to God, but it has to start in the house of God because judgment starts there. The word for us and our nation is this, “ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it that we may travel it and find rest for our souls.” We will see the hand of salvation return to this nation once the people of God quit refusing to old, godly way and stop taking the road they should not be traveling. Why? For broad is the way that leads to destruction, but narrow is the way that leads to life. Many enter by the broad way, but few find the gate to the narrow way with even fewer entering therein. Let us turn from our sins and repent and seek the face of God and return the Way, Jesus, who gives us Life in him, who is the only Truth! Don’t just be a hearer of this Word from the watchman on the wall, but be a doer of it and live!
Father, thank you for your love, grace, and mercy. We don’t even deserve to hear the warning from you, but your grace and love show us the way out of the misery and step from darkness into your marvelous light. Help me and your people to find the light of the truth and to know your way and to walk in life, as we find the rest for our souls that you have promised. Help me to be one crying in the wilderness to make straight the paths for the LORD as he returns to this world set up his kingdom and rule! We await you Holy Spirit. Have your way in our lives. Teach us the old way and let us walk in it and see the rest you grant. Your will be done in our lives, not ours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
