God blesses the one who reads the words of this prophecy to the church, and he blesses all who listen to its message and obey what it says, for the time is near. – Revelation 1:3
The apostle John delivered to us the revelation of Jesus that an angel gave to him about what will happen at the end of time and the world as we know it. At the outset of this revelation, John wrote that the ones who teach the contents of this book to the church will be blessed but also those that listen to its message and obey it!
Things I have learned from revealed knowledge of God is that obedience brings blessing. One thing that John Bevere taught recently from his latest book, Good or God? is that we have to reconsider what we perceive or evaluate as good versus what is God. A lot of what we have been taught is good must be from God is a wrongful notion and a doctrine of demons designed and deployed by the devil to deceive people into believing a false gospel.
We often think that if we just get people to accept Jesus as Savior that all is well. They’re saved and good to go. But this in totally contrary to the very teachings of Jesus while he was here on earth and even in the confines of the book of Revelation itself. Let’s examine some scriptures as we consider this concept. One is the very verse of our daily wash for today. John writes that blessed are those that listen to the words of this book. But is that all he says? No! Jesus told him also that the one who listens must obey what is in the book in order to receive the blessing. Every promise God gives us is conditional. He proposes a situation to which we have to agree to and execute.
Let us continue. Revelation 3:5 states, All who are victorious will be clothed in white. I will never erase their names from the Book of Life, but I will announce before my Father and his angels that they are mine. Do you see in this verse that Jesus says, all who are victorious will be clothed in white, [he] will never erase their names from the Book of Life. He promises eternal life, signified by clothed in white and name in Book of Life, but they have to be victorious. How are they victorious? They do what God commanded during their lifetimes.
Moving along. Because you have obeyed my command to persevere, I will protect you from the great time of testing that will come upon the whole world to test those who belong to this world. (Rev 3:10) Notice that Jesus promised to protect the church in Philadelphia from the coming judgment that will test the world because they obeyed his command to persevere. The blessing is to be spared from judgment, as were the children of Israel while they were in Egypt during the plagues. However, these Philadelphians had to persevere as commanded, just like the Israelites had to partake of the Pesach and cover their doorposts and lentils with the blood of the lamb to be spared from the judgment that came on Egypt. (Does this sort of dispel the myth of a pretrib rapture? Another article for another day.)
There is a blessing that comes with hearing the words of this book of revelation about Jesus as the Righteous King, who comes back to earth to gather his people, to rule as the Son of David for 1000 years, and to set up his eternal kingdom. The key, though, is our obedience to the commands Jesus gives us in the book. If we don’t do what it says, the blessing does not come. Also, let us not get hung up on the blessing because of our obedience. We are to look to the One, who gives the blessing – Jesus the Righteous King of kings! We should and must want him above all, even the good that does come down from the Father of lights.
Father, thank you for your love, grace, and mercy. Thank you for sharing Jesus with us. It is not enough to just admit and accept Jesus as Savior. We have to obey your commands. Many people talk against Lordship salvation, but they neglect the teachings that you gave yourself to us while living here on earth. You asked people why they say they love you but don’t keep your commandments. You also said that many will even call you LORD, LORD but will depart into hell created for demons because they were lawless; didn’t keep your commandments. Your word is true because it is a written reflection and representation of you. You cannot lie! Therefore, your word must be true and, as you say, will accomplish what you sent it out to do without returning void. Teach us how and what to do in order to be in obedience to you beyond the written word. Give us your revealed word in our spirits, as you did with John in this book about things yet to come. Father, your will be done, not ours, on this earth as it is done in heaven. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
