But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” – Genesis 21:11
Sarah birthed Isaac at the time God appointed. To celebrate Isaac’s birth Abraham threw a huge party, but Sarah noticed that Ishmael mocked Isaac. Thus, she went to her husband and demanded that he send the boy and his mother away because it would be through Isaac that God’s covenant would happen. Abraham sent the two away as God told him to do in response to Sarah’s complaint.
There is always a consequence of our actions. Sometimes they are good and other times bad. The LORD promised Abraham that He’d provide a son to fulfill the covenant, but the couple in their humanity tried to force the hand of God. This decision and its outcomes endangered the lives of the older son and his mother when Abraham banished them from his family. It vexed him greatly, but God promised him that the boy would become a great nation because of Abraham and nothing of note about the boy. In fact, God earlier prophesied that the boy would be like a wild donkey causing trouble for all, and all against him.
What has God spoken to you about in your life or to do with your life? Has he stated that he wants to do something in and through you? Has the response or fulfillment of that been delayed according to your thinking? Or not panned out as you determined? Be patient! Wait upon God! Do what you know to do in the meantime, but don’t try to force God’s hand in the matter. You will only come to regret it and suffer the consequences of your doing and choosing. If you do so, don’t blame God for your mistakes and choices. Again I say, “wait upon the LORD!”
Father, thank you for reminding me today of your plans and choices for my life, as well as those of all upon the earth. You desire that no one should perish but live and have everlasting life with you through Jesus. I pray that someone will read this selection and see that life without you is pointless and to make choices independently of you will only lead to misery and oft time failures. I have been there and done that. I know firsthand what it is to suffer the consequences of my actions when not trusting you and being patient to wait upon you to fulfill your promise. Obedience brings blessing. There is no other way. May your will be done, not mine. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
