Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.” – Genesis 24:12
Abraham sent his senior servant back to his family to get a wife for Isaac. When the servant reached the homeland of Abraham, he knelt and prayed that God would make him successful in acquiring a wife for Isaac from the family of Abraham. Rebekah of the house of Nahor came to get water and provided a drink to the servant as well as his camels, which was the sign he requested of God as proof of his success and answered prayer.
We must learn to trust God enough to provide for us daily what we need. Not just food or clothing or shelter but whatever it is that the day requires. Jesus, when asked of the apostles how to pray, he stated in his model prayer, “Give us this day, our daily bread.” Despite the vast gap in time from Isaac to Jesus, God has always wanted his people to rely upon him and to do as the servant did in requesting of God what is needed to be successful for the day at hand. Accordingly, Jesus told us not to worry about the past because it’s gone nor the future because it may not come. Today is the day of living, which requires provision. Let us trust God daily in prayer to provide for us and not to worry or be anxious over things beyond our control or out of our reach. Live for today.
Father, thank you for today and being the source of all my provision. It is no wonder that one of the many names attributed to you is YHWH-Yireh – the LORD God who provides. For as you say there really is nothing too difficult for you. Why would there be? You created the entire universe from nothing through your Word, Jesus. Thus, I humbly ask that you allow this day to be successful and to provide what I need for this today to be so. May your will be done, not mine. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
