God keeps his promises.

1 Kings 8:23
"O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below—you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way."

Observation:
Solomon had completed building the temple and then dedicated it. God showed up in the form of a dark cloud filling the temple and prevented the priests from doing their duties of worship. Solomon then began to pray and thank God for abiding in this building made by human hands when not even the heavens could contain God. In the opening statement, Solomon acknowledged God’s faithfulness.

Application:
Solomon points out that God keeps his covenant of love with his people, those "who continue wholeheartedly in [his] way." We are reminded of Moses’ word, "God is the faithful God" and "He will never leave you or forsake you." The one thing we can be sure of about God is that he is true to his Word. The New Testament writer wrote, "Let God be true and every man a liar." God has delivered on every one of his promises, both of blessing and of curse.

Throughout the Bible we read of God promising to bless people, as he told Abraham that the whole world would be blessed through his Seed. Those who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior are well aware of the fulfillment of this promise/covenant. On the other hand, we read throughout the Old Testament how God promised to cast off Israel if they rebelled against him and sought other gods. When Israel and Judah, both, went and served other gods, the two kingdoms of Israel were exiled into captivity: Israel into Assyria and Judah into Babylon. God kept his Word that he would cast Israel from his presence and drive them from the land given to them as an inheritance.

David’s grandson, King Asa, wholeheartedly made an oath with the people to serve God. The Bible says they sought God eagerly and were found by him (1 Chr. 15:15). God blessed Judah during the days of King Asa because he did what was right in the eyes of God. David never failed to have a Son on his throne because he wholeheartedly sought after God and continued in the ways of God his whole life except the issue concerning Uriah the Hittite, 1 Kings tells us.

If you "love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength," then God keeps his "covenant of love" with you too. If we don’t seek God with all of our heart and soul, God is not obliged to keep his covenant. He instituted it and set the guidelines for it. A covenant is in effect so long as the originator warrants. He loves us no matter what and desires for us to be reconciled to him.

Prayer:
Father, People want to follow you with all of their heart and soul, but most people are not made of productive soil. They tend to be hard, stony, or weed-choked soil. Many times in life, I have wondered if I am of the weed-choked soil because I have allowed the cares of life to get the best of me. I desire to be "good soil" and want to serve you with all my heart and soul. I know in my head that your Word is true and that you are faithful. I need to know in my heart the revelation of who you are. That you are the Lord who loves his children to 1,000 generations. Show yourself to me and let it be said of me that I was found of you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
